Lenteroos

Helleborus orientalis

Plant hellebores in autumn or spring, in part to full shade in moisture-retentive soil enriched with leaf-mould — they're hardy evergreen perennials that flower from December to April when little else is in bloom, making them indispensable for UK winter gardens. Hellebores are very hardy (RHS H7) and long-lived (15+ years from a single planting). Cut all the OLD leaves down to the ground in late autumn (November) — this is the single most important husbandry rule, showcasing the flowers when they emerge and removing the foliage that carries hellebore leaf-spot fungus. "Lenten rose" types (Helleborus orientalis and modern hybrids) are by far the most popular — flower in nodding clusters of cream, white, pink, plum, near-black, and yellow. All parts toxic if eaten — wear gloves when handling.
