When should I sow cosmos in the UK?

Late March to early May indoors in modules; late May direct outdoors. Don't sow earlier — cosmos hates cold soil and damp germination conditions. A single sowing of 8–12 plants gives flowers from July through first frost in October.

Why is my cosmos producing leaves but no flowers?

The soil is too rich. Cosmos flowers on lean, average-to-poor soil; rich, manured beds give all leaf and no bloom. Switch to a high-potash feed (or no feed at all) and stop watering except in genuine drought. The plant should look slightly under-cared-for to flower its best.

How tall do cosmos grow?

Standard cultivars (Sensation, Purity) reach 1.2–1.5 m — back of a border. Versailles series 1 m, good for cutting and middle borders. Dwarf cultivars (Sonata, Cosmic, Apollo) reach only 45–60 cm — ideal for containers and edges. Cosmos sulphureus (orange cosmos) is a different species, shorter and more heat-loving.

Can I grow cosmos in containers in the UK?

Excellent for containers. Dwarf varieties (Sonata, Cosmic Orange) in 30-litre pots; standard varieties in larger 50-litre containers with staking. Use peat-free compost without added feed (avoid the cosmos in leaf without flowers trap). Water consistently; deadhead daily for the long run.

When does cosmos start and stop flowering?

First flowers from mid-July onwards, depending on sowing date. Peak August through to October. Stops at the first hard frost, which kills the plant outright. With a March indoor sowing and an aggressive deadheading regime, you get 14–16 weeks of continuous picking.

Does cosmos self-seed?

Modestly. Open-pollinated cultivars (Purity, Sensation) drop seed in autumn that germinates in spring in mild gardens, particularly on bare soil. Self-sown seedlings are unpredictable in colour (especially from Sensation Mix) but often grow more vigorously than sown-and-planted-out plants. F1 hybrids don't reliably self-seed.

Cosmos is a frost-tender annual (RHS H1c) and one of the most reliable, prolific cut flowers in any UK garden — a single plant produces dozens of stems from July to first frost. Plant 45 cm apart in any decent soil with sun for most of the day; rich soil actually reduces flowering, so don't over-feed. Deadhead religiously — cosmos stops flowering as soon as seed heads form. Purity (pure white), Sensation Mix (mixed pink, white, magenta), Apricot Lemonade (apricot to lemon shades) and Versailles series (long stems) are the easy starters. Self-seeds modestly in mild gardens.
