When can I sow beetroot in the UK?

Late March under cloches in southern England; mid-April to early May outdoors elsewhere. Successional sowings every 3 weeks until early July give continuous picking. Late July sowings of fast varieties crop into November. Avoid sowing into cold wet soil; beetroot wants soil above 8°C to germinate.

Why are my beetroot plants bolting (flowering)?

A cold spell after sowing triggers bolting — the plant thinks it's been through a winter. Choose Boltardy (the only truly bolt-resistant cultivar) for sowings before May. Other causes: drought stress, planting too close, or the variety isn't bolt-resistant. Once a plant bolts, pull it; the root will be small and woody.

Why do I get multiple seedlings from one beetroot seed?

Each beetroot seed is actually a corky cluster containing 2–4 individual seeds. They germinate as a tight clump. Once seedlings are 5 cm tall, thin to the strongest single seedling per station — use scissors to snip the unwanted ones at soil level rather than pulling (which disturbs the keeper). Monogerm varieties (single-seed clusters) exist (Boltardy is sometimes available as monogerm) and skip this step.

How big should I let my beetroot grow?

5–7 cm across — golf-ball to tennis-ball size — is the sweet spot for flavour and texture. Pull when they reach this size; smaller is sweeter but yields little; bigger gets woody and coarse. Pull alternate plants from a row first to give the remainder room to keep swelling for a second harvest a fortnight later.

Can I grow beetroot in containers in the UK?

Yes — a 30 cm deep container grows 6–8 plants. Use peat-free multi-purpose compost; water consistently; thin to one per station. Container beetroot is sweeter than ground-grown because you control watering. Round varieties (Boltardy, Pablo F1) suit containers best.

Are beetroot leaves edible?

Yes — the leaves are essentially the same as chard (both are Beta vulgaris in different cultivar groups). Pick young leaves for salads; older leaves cook like spinach. Don't strip the plant though — the leaves are powering the root. Take an outer leaf or two per plant per week.
