When can I sow radishes in the UK?

March (under cloches) to September outdoors. Successional sowings every 2–3 weeks. Avoid sowing in mid-summer heat (late June through July) — radishes bolt and go woody fast in temperatures above 22°C. Best sowings are spring (March–May) and late summer (August–September).

Why are my radishes all leaves and no root?

Three usual causes. Too crowded: thin to 3 cm apart so each plant has room to swell. Too much nitrogen: rich soil pushes leaves at root expense; don't add fresh manure before sowing. Too much shade: radishes need sun for at least half the day; full shade gives all leaf.

Why are my radishes splitting or hot?

Left in the ground too long. Radishes go from perfect to past-it in 7–10 days. Check the row every couple of days once roots reach 1.5 cm across; pull as soon as they hit 2.5 cm. Drought stress also splits them — keep them consistently watered.

What variety of radish is best for the UK?

Cherry Belle (round red, fast, reliable), French Breakfast (long red-and-white, classic French), Sparkler (round red/white), Easter Egg Mix (multicoloured) for summer. For autumn–winter: black Spanish, Mooli (the white daikon — see separate `daikon` slug). Heat-tolerant: Rudi, Saxa.

Can I grow radishes in containers?

One of the easiest container crops. A 30 cm-deep pot grows a couple of dozen radishes. Use peat-free compost; sow thinly; thin to 3 cm; water consistently. Container radishes are sweeter than ground-grown because you control watering. Brilliant first crop for kids — fast results.

Are radish leaves edible?

Yes — young leaves are edible raw in salads (a peppery rocket-like flavour). Larger leaves can be stir-fried. Don't strip the plant though — the leaves are powering the root. Eat thinnings whole; pick the youngest leaves from mature plants.

Radishes are hardy annuals (RHS H3–H4) and the fastest UK vegetable — summer varieties (Cherry Belle, French Breakfast, Sparkler) crop in 4–6 weeks; winter daikon types (separate `daikon` slug) take 10–12 weeks. Sow thinly in light fertile soil with sun for at least half the day; thin to 3 cm apart. Pull young (the size of a 10p coin) for the best flavour and texture — radishes left too long get woody, hot and split. The classic first crop for kids: from seed packet to plate in a month. Flea beetle pock-marks young leaves but doesn't usually stop the crop.
