Jostaberry is a blackcurrant-gooseberry hybrid that fruits extremely quickly — often within two years, sometimes even in the first year from a strong plant. The large, dark berries have a flavour somewhere between the two parents, sweeter than blackcurrants and without the gooseberry thorns. As a shrubby plant rather than a true tree, it establishes fast and is very disease-resistant, shrugging off mildew and big bud mite that plague its parents. Self-fertile and incredibly low-maintenance; prune out older wood every few years and it keeps going.
