Grafted lemons typically produce their first fruit within three years, and a well-grown tree can be remarkably productive — fruiting nearly year-round in the right conditions. In cooler climates they make excellent conservatory or cool greenhouse plants; just bring them inside when temperatures drop below about 7C. They are self-fertile, so one tree is sufficient. Feed regularly with a citrus fertiliser from spring to autumn and do not let them sit in waterlogged compost. Meyer lemon is especially good for containers and slightly hardier than standard varieties.
