Grafted mandarins typically begin bearing around their third year and are self-fertile. They are slightly more cold-tolerant than lemons and limes, but still need frost protection in temperate climates — a conservatory or unheated greenhouse suits them well. The fragrant blossom is a delight in spring. Satsuma types are among the hardiest and easiest for beginners. Thin fruit clusters to improve size and sweetness; letting the tree carry every fruitlet leads to small, disappointing fruit. Feed with citrus fertiliser through the growing season.
