Mirabelle plums start cropping within three to four years on St Julien A rootstock. These small, golden-yellow plums have an exquisite honeyed sweetness that is quite different from standard plums — they are the pride of Lorraine in France, where they are used in tarts, preserves, and the famous eau-de-vie. Most mirabelles are self-fertile, though a nearby pollinator can improve crops. They tend to produce heavily in good years and can benefit from thinning. A warm, sheltered position gives the best-flavoured fruit.
