Serviceberry is a close relative of the saskatoon and equally quick to fruit — usually within two to three years. The sweet, juicy berries ripen in June and taste like a mild, sweet blueberry with an almond note from the small seeds. Birds adore them, so you may need to net the tree or accept sharing the harvest. Beautiful white spring blossom and fiery autumn colour make it a first-class ornamental tree that happens to produce delicious fruit. Self-fertile and virtually maintenance-free. One of the best dual-purpose garden trees you can plant.
